New customized multifocal contact lens shows promise for improving vision in presbyopia
A novel customized multifocal corneo-scleral contact lens shows promising short-term results in improving vision across distances for patients with presbyopic, with acceptable trade-offs in contrast sensitivity and depth perception, according to a study.
The study included 11 participants aged 45 to 80 years who were fitted with the novel lens and evaluated at baseline, 20 minutes, and 1-month post-fitting. Researchers assessed visual acuity, stereopsis, contrast sensitivity, and ocular aberrations.
Significant improvements in stereopsis and certain ocular aberrations, including primary and secondary spherical aberration and coma were observed post-fitting. Most patients achieved excellent visual acuity at distance and intermediate ranges, with over 90% reaching functional near vision levels as well. However, binocular contrast sensitivity was slightly better with traditional spectacles, particularly at higher spatial frequencies.
Despite minor trade-offs in contrast sensitivity and depth perception, the study concluded that the multifocal CSCL provided effective vision correction across distances and may be a viable option for managing presbyopia.
